“Black Voters Matter supports the Maryland Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission’s recommendation for a new congressional map that protects the rights of Black voters and all marginalized communities across the state. The fight for fair maps is a fight for the political power and future of our communities.
History shows that redistricting is often used to silence Black voices. Republican-led, mid-decade gerrymandering has spread across the country, undermining democracy and threatening communities not just in the South, but in Maryland as well.
Without fair maps, Maryland’s Black communities, working-class families, and other marginalized groups will continue to face the consequences. We are watching this process closely, and we’re glad to see the commission take this important step toward protecting our rights and our future.”
