Cliff Albright and LaTosha Brown, Co-Founders of Black Voters Matter, and April England-Albright, National Legal Director of Black Voters Matter, issued the following statement in response to the House passing the SAVE Act.
House Republicans have just passed the so-called SAVE Act, a dangerous piece of legislation designed to strip millions of Americans—especially Black, brown, young, and marginalized voters—of their right to vote. At the same time, they’ve approved a budget that reflects their warped priorities: protecting wealth and power while leaving everyday Americans behind. This is not governance—it’s an assault on democracy.
We are witnessing a rogue Congress in action, one that is no longer working for the people but instead is bending to the will of an administration driven by greed and a hunger for unchecked power. This is not leadership, it’s submission to Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The MAGA Congress is too weak to govern and too corrupt to defy the extremists pulling their strings.
When you have people so incompetent that they text military attack plans in Signal groups and impose tariffs on penguins, the only way to maintain this level of abuse is to keep people from voting. This isn’t just politics – this is a spiritual and moral crisis demanding that we organize, mobilize, and build power together. Our freedom depends on it, and just like those who came before us, we will fight back.
